OVH Data Center Fire

A Massive fire broke out in OVH Data Center in Strasbourg, France on March 10, 2021 resulting in thousands of websites and businesses shutting down. The fire was brought under control but not before completely damaging the datacenter. Fortunately, there are no reports of any human casualty because of the fire.

This brings us to an often asked question in event of such disasters. Could this have been prevented? The answer is no and yes. No, because data centers have to and will take all necessary precautions to avoid such accidents and disasters. However, nobody can ever know when some fatal accident may occur resulting in failure of all the arrangements. So, in a way, one cannot completely rule out chances of such disasters not occuring. But then how does disaster can be prevented? No one can completely prevent the disasters but can always be ready for such emergencies by adopting strategies like Disaster Recovery and Backup.

For any business that deploys IT Infrastructure for ease of business, a Disaster Recovery Plan is very important. Even a downtime of a few hours may result in huge losses. Disaster Recovery Plans should be part of IT Infrastructure deployment. Many of the companies who have servers in the Strasbourg datacenter of OVH did not have a Disaster Recovery site and they were the ones who were the most affected. Those companies who already had Disaster Recovery sites in other locations had peace of mind as their business was conducted as usual. Disaster Recovery can either be Active-Active or Active-Passive. Active-active architecture is optimized for uptime. In this setup, the secondary servers are synced with the primary servers and whenever the primary server is down, the application traffic automatically fails over to the secondary server and the secondary server becomes the new primary server. Once the primary server is back online, you can failback to the primary server automatically and the replication continues. Active-passive architecture is less complex. In this setup, you set up a cron job or scheduler to copy the data from the primary server to the secondary server. This setup is easy to manage but there is usually some downtime and this architecture can be adopted if some downtime and data loss is acceptable. This architecture is less expensive but also involves manual intervention.

While Disaster Recovery Plans are vital for any organization’s business continuity, backups are equally important. Many organizations who adopt Disaster Recovery Plans often make the mistake of ignoring backups assuming that the Disaster Recovery will ensure data security. Backup should always be a part of IT Infrastructure setup irrespective of whether you adopt Disaster Recovery plans or not. It is always advisable to opt for 3-2-1 backup strategy. 3-2-1 simply means keeping 3 copies of data. To simplify the concept, it means you should have at least 2 copies of the data in different storage media and 1 copy on an offsite storage. So, even if there is a disaster like fire which can wipe off the data from the locate storage media, the offsite copy of the data means you don’t lose it. Also, keeping local copies help to quickly restore data in simple events like accidental deletion of data or hard drive crash. Though backup helps you to be back in business quickly with the availability of data.

The OVH accident has once again shown the importance of having a Disaster Recovery and a Backup Plan to minimize business losses due to unseen emergencies.

Why Server Speed is Important for Increasing Revenues?

Faster loading speed and targeted content are vital elements for increasing sales for your business online. A second’s delay in page loading can result in contributing to 10% of page abandonment.

If your website takes long to respond, you are literally killing the sales and revenue of your website. Some of the latest surveys show that loading speed of websites directly impacts the amount of traffic directed to your website, a slow website can frustrate your potential customers which is something that you don’t want. Read on to know why the speed of the server is important to increase your revenue.

According to studies, if your website isn’t accessible in 3 to 6 seconds, visitors start to abandon the website. A slow website will decrease your sales and give a negative perception of your brand to your customers.

Brands like Amazon, Yahoo, Flipkart have cracked the formula to boost their business by reducing the website load time to less than 3 seconds, according to a study, speeding up website can improve the conversion rate by 2%

This way your potential customers will stay on your page longer to look at what you are trying to sell rather than waiting for it to load.

If your website becomes visible in 5 seconds, the speed seems to be good, but the ideal loading time of a website must be below 3 seconds. Under 10 seconds is fair, but any website that takes more than 10 seconds to load can lose ranking and conversion. There are a number of tools that are available to report the performance of your website. How to prevent organizational data loss?

Data loss can result in disastrous situations for organizations, it can also result in loss of revenues, irate customers that ultimately hold the potential to damage an organization’s reputation.

Today, Data has become increasingly important for all businesses. Data loss, either from a security breach or due to a careless mistake, can be devastating for businesses. It is a well-known fact that 60% of companies who suffer data loss eventually face a situation that leads to a complete shutdown. In this blog, we will focus on ways organisations can prevent a potential data loss.

Before we look at data loss prevention, it is important we identify the different types of data an organization holds.

1. Customer Information:

This is customer’s personal and non-personal information that is usually held in a company’s Customer Relationship Management Software.

2. Operational Information:

This set of data encompasses organization’s operational data pertaining to its employees, practices and businesses processes

3. Intellectual property(IP):

In a digital world, IP is every company’s prized possession. It may relate to its products, services and future business plans.

Information security as a term refers to the protection of ALL data and is different from cybersecurity that purely protects computer-based data. Today, increased importance is given to cybersecurity, as many organizations are vulnerable to looming cyber threats. While there are many factors that may cause a data loss, the sources of damage will usually fall into one of three categories: internal error, mechanical failure or external attack.

To prevent such an incident, companies can resort to following:

1. Regular Backups:

Any organization’s data is one of the most valuable assets that contains all the vital and sensitive information about its clients, contracts, orders, etc. While many large and medium-sized corporations have resorted to automated daily backups, there are many, especially smaller ones who resort to manual backups largely due to lack of adequate expertise and infrastructure. These practices result in security loopholes

2. Email Security:

Phishing attacks are more rampant than ever before that is because it is also one of the easiest forms of cyber attack for a criminal to carry out. It’s important that you find a powerful email security and antivirus software to prevent malignant emails getting through.

3. Adequate Website Security:

The website is one of the important digital assets for every organization in this hyper-connected digital world. It is therefore imperative for companies to adequately secure their organizational websites. QualiSpace offer various website security tools such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), CodeGuard and SiteLock.

While data breaches are an attempt by agents who deliberately attempt to break into systems, it is not accurate to assume that all these agents are external, various reports reveal that there have been many reported instances where data breach was caused by an internal factor. Not necessarily intentional but largely due to common negligence and human error. Which is though there are numerous tools and ways to prevent a data breach from happening, the human factor is usually the most dangerous part of an attack, as employees are often unaware that they could be opening harmful malware files or creating a gateway for criminals to extradite important company information.

Training and updating employees on newer cyber security policies and thereby establishing a strong security framework with ideal firewalls and tools in place can, therefore, be considered ideal for any organization.

The X-factor – that investors look for before investing in a business

Investors are looking for businesses that can give them a great deal. It is hard to get through to the investors with a feeble game plan. Investors are looking for companies that will give returns within no-time and yet be radically sustainable.

Venture Capitalists are not only looking out for great ideas but they are investing in the people behind it. To get to the point that potential investors start happily investing in your business here is something that will help you.

What are the loopholes you need to check before you pitch:

Good customer and market orientation is something you need to take care of. The attitude of if and when will not be enough. You should be subtle yet confident when you make your pitch. Also one needs to deal with a lot of criticism before the business could go live. One should be open to feedback and flexible for sustaining in the given market trends.

Don’t be shy, feel free to innovate:

There are infinite possibilities for ideas and opportunities to make them real. There are businesses which ship material to the moon and back, seriously. So if you feel what you are doing is going to be useful to a big lot tomorrow, shying away is not an option.

FAQs you would face in your pitch:

Why did you start your company? What is the difference you would create with this project of yours? What are the down points of your project? Your plan of action in the first few years?

It is ultimately about execution:

A brilliant idea can only do good in the ever-changing market space if it is executed well. How you execute your vision is what makes your business go from small to big or an epic fail in the market.

A piece of advice:

Your team matters the most. No business has ever come up without having the right people around. Never fall for the – ‘I can do this alone’ type of thought.

If the first few pitches fail or don’t do much for your aspirations to come true, don’t be let down. It may not be your business which is wrong, but maybe they were the wrong investors you were pitching in to.

When should you look to move your business to the cloud?

The fast-moving industrial space has begun a shift towards cloud computing. Companies from all sectors and of all sizes are migrating to the cloud for higher efficiency, increased productivity, tightened security, and other additional benefits.

So, what do you mean by cloud computing and how to know if you are ready to move your business to the cloud?

What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing, in simple terms, is when you store, manage, network, analyze, and process data on the internet (which is referred to as the cloud). There are three types of cloud services, which are sometimes referred to as cloud computing stacks because they lie on top of one another. The first type is the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) that lets you rent servers, networks, operating systems, and other IT infrastructure from a cloud computing company on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The second type is the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) wherein the cloud computing companies supply an on-demand environment for developers to create mobile and web apps. The last type is the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) in which the cloud computing companies offer hosting, managing, and maintaining software applications along with handling the infrastructure, updates, and security.

How to shift your business to the cloud?

Shifting to the cloud requires planning and commitment. One needs to give a comprehensive thought before making this shift. To catch on to this trend, many companies are now offering cloud computing services to lets users migrate their business to the cloud. Some of these companies are Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, IBM Cloud Computing, Alibaba Cloud Compute Service, etc. If you want to shift your business to the cloud, register on one of these services and choose the right product for your business.

What are the benefits of shifting business to the cloud?

Shifting the already established business to the cloud, no doubt has many benefits, and hence this ongoing trend. The cloud gives you the freedom to increase resources as per your needs. For instance, the company manufacturing and selling woolen garments is expected to witness increased sales during winters and muted sales throughout other months of the year. The cloud gives you the flexibility to multiply the resources when the situation demands so. Another key benefit is the cost-cutting. Since you rent someone else’s space, you don’t have to invest extra on IT professionals, servers or other related expenses; you just have to pay to the cloud providers according to your needs.

Among the various available cloud services, the automatic cloud backup is one that reserves your data. Since the data once lostis difficult to recover, this cloud backup service is an excellent way to safeguard your files.

The cloud service providers handle your updates and security.Additionally, the cloud storage facilities like Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, and SkyDrive lets you store and share data on the cloud. Contrary to the old-fashion method of sendingdocuments via email attachments, this cloud storage cuts down your time and have a large storage capacity as well.

When to shift your business to the cloud?

Now that you know the meaning of cloud computing and its many underlying benefits, you would wonder when is the right time to shift your business to the cloud. Use the following checklist to know whether your business is ready to make the shift.

1. Your customer data is secured:

Moving your business to the cloud requires a potent database security. Your customer database including personal information and payment details should be secured before you shift to the cloud. Make sure to comply with information security standards like the PCI DSS before you consider taking your business to the cloud.

2. You can see more revenue opportunities:

Moving your business to the cloud could bring in more revenue opportunities if you know the right technique. Your purchases could increase twofold if you review your existing products and make them in compliance with the cloud. If reselling your products in a cloud-friendly way could create revenue opportunities, then you should consider shifting to the cloud.

3. You are ready for recurring revenue:

Once you take your business to the cloud, you create recurring revenue opportunities contrary to the one-time sale you made before. For instance, you would send email reminders and create online offers to make your customers revisit you. Is your business ready for recurring sales? Do you have enough supply and resources to feed the recurring demand? If the answer is yes, you can take your business to the cloud.

4. You have a quick billing system:

When the customers repurchase from you, your business grows beyond the limit. You have to keep a record of customer orders, shipment, and other sale invoices. When your business expands, your billing is needed to be quicker than before. So if you are planning to take the enterprise to the cloud you must have a quick billing system.

Rebuilding your organization in compliance with the internet is a smooth process if executed in a good order. A proper amount of planning coupled with a thorough analysis of the future scope would elevate your business to a different level.

What is Ransomware? How can it impact the Digital India Dream?

On July 2, 2015, Prime Minister NarendraModi launched the Digital India campaign to connect India’s rural areas with high-speed internet and providing government services digitally. Apart from these two motives, improving India’s online infrastructure, bettering internet connectivity, and ensuring digital literacy, were among the few others.

India recently witnessed demonetization which prompted many citizens to embrace cashless or digital transactions. With an easy access to the internet and the latest demonetization drive, there was a huge spike in the number of online transactions. Though India is on the path of achieving digital literacy, meaning, making Indians possess a set of skills required for full participation in a knowledge society, one cannot neglect the threats it would bring along.

The digital space was recently attacked by a ransomware named Petya, which was first discovered in 2016. According to a report by a security software firm Symantec, the most affected country in the Asia Pacific region was India. On the world map, India was the seventh most affected nation.

Another malware that hit globally in the same year was ‘WannaCry’. With ransomware like Petya and WannaCry in existence, is the Digital India Dream blurring? Before we answer this question, we should learn what a Ransomware is.

Ransomware is a malicious software that blocks access to computer systems until a sum of money (ransom) is paid. This malware holds a system’s database in captive, and it is released only in exchange for money. There were two ransomware attacks that hit globally in the past four months. The first ‘WannaCry’, short for WannaCrypt, hit in May 2017, and a month later, ‘Petya’ hit in June 2017. The former ransomware said to have affected 2,30,000 companies across 150 countries in the world.

The Petyaransomware spreads through Microsoft Windows computers using EternalBlue vulnerability. Once it hits a computer, it quickly spreads throughout the organization. This ransomware is said to have a better mechanism in spreading independently than the WannaCryransomware.

Why did Petya hit India so badly? Why is India one of the most hit countries in the world? The lack of awareness could be one of the reasons why we fell victim to this attack. Maintaining cybersecurity is said to be a shared responsibility of the government, the organizations involved, and the internet users. Another reason why Petya hit so hard could be the increase in online payments.

The shift to a cashless society could be because of the increase in mobile phones, increase in the internet usage, and the recent demonetization. According to KPMG, an auditing company in India, few measures for a long-term success in digital payments include a strong administrative structure, efficient redressal policies, substantial security divisions, grounds for assistance and ease in cashless transactions.

Another probable reason for India’s vulnerability is the usage of obsolete software and hardware, which the world has already scrapped long time ago. India uses old computers with older operating systems. Having a weaker composition enables malware and viruses to get into the systems easily as an old system holds a weaker security. While the world is using up-to-date operating systems with the latest hardware, many systems used in India still belong to the mid-2000s.

Software piracy is another common phenomenon in India. One can find stalls of pirated software CDs throughout the country. This unoriginal software has a weaker security framework, which makes the computer system further exposed to viruses.

Another common form of cybercrime is phishing, which is a deceitful way of sending emails to cause individuals to reveal their personal information like credit card details, passwords, etc. The person pretends to be from a known company and asks for personal details.

With an alarming increase in cybercrimes, the dream of Digital India and achieving digital literacy is under threat for sure. But it can be curbed if the government, various organizations, and the internet users join hands to make cybersecurity an important concern. The masses could be educated with basic knowledge of security. Software piracy could be banned and the internet users could be encouraged to update their software. Countries should come together to fight against cybercrime and make the world a healthy place for digital requirements.

Innovation: The heart of your entrepreneurial journey

Innovation is important and the soul of entrepreneurial journey, a way of empowering people to take charge of their lives. Your business, work, or overall economy survives because the leaders have been able to adapt to changing times and cater to the ever changing needs of the community.

Every economy is largely driven by the business that operates in there, without which it would be difficult for an economy to survive. But a business must also sustain itself and be able to constantly evolve to fulfill the demands of the community and the people. It is therefore imperative for a business to be innovative and resourceful.

Innovation can be a facilitator of success at both individual and national level. Innovation and creativity walk hand-in-hand when it comes to entrepreneurship. Here are five great ways to look at innovation in order to understand its importance in entrepreneurship.

Innovation Only Tool to Solve Problems

We cannot solve problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. – Albert Einstein

Creative and innovative ideas with far sighted vision are needed to solve the problem, at the same time, such solutions will not emerge from simple and linear planning and problem-solving processes. One need to understand that innovation is quintessentially is about seeking, perceiving and solving problems in creative ways. In a fast changing world, every company needs to be more agile and responsive to their customer needs.

Innovation is the driving passion for Global Startup Movement

Starting up with your own venture and giving up corporate work is a rising trend in emerging markets like India and China. Startups with their passion and enthusiasm are largely motivated to cater with their out-of-box ideas to social and economic problems of society, making the world a better place to live in. Government too is taking initiatives to support entrepreneurs in achieving their dream by supporting them with different schemes and programs.

Cloud technology or cloud computing has been a strong enabler for startup eco-system because it gives them the flexibility to scale their business as when the need be.

Internet of things

The rise of the internet has created a platform to enable connections, data-sharing, and streaming. It has transformed how people go about their daily lives and given birth to many new businesses and revenue streams. While some large organizations find it disrupting, there are many who are picking up it as an opportunity and entering the space with all their might.

Changing trends of Workplace dynamics

Today’s Individuals, Millennials as they are called, are increasingly jumping jobs when compared to earlier generations; they are on a constant lookout jobs where they believe they can work to their maximum potential. This has considerably changed the recruiting process and recruiters are now looking to source candidates from unconventional platforms like Social Media. To them, the reputation of an organization is becoming more and more important. They also seem to work better with flexible hours and hence freelancing and project based hiring co-working and collaborative working are fast emerging trends. Millennials are at the core of revolutionizing traditional workplace and companies are adapting to changing needs of both their potential hires and existing employees.

Innovating at the pace of customer expectations

Businesses have always been about meeting and enhancing customer expectations and experiences. The Internet and mobile technology are constantly lifting customer expectations and making it difficult for organizations to catch-up. Customers now have an increased control of what they want and how they wish to purchase it. Companies are therefore looking to leverage same mobile and internet technology to gauge the ever-changing demands and attributes of their target customers. Use of Social Media by brands is the best example to support this case.

10 Effective Ways To Generate Traffic To Your Website

Drive Traffic to Website

Your website, your very own website determines the amount of money you mint. And when your entire business functions online, your world and your revenue revolves around your website. The revenue you generate doesn’t come in so easily. The amount of traffic your website generates determines how much you would be making. So, it would be apt to say that your website should be “the crowd-puller” if you wish to carve a place for yourself amongst the top-ranking websites.

Your website does not attract users on its own and if it does, you wouldn’t be receiving the kind of traffic that matches your expectations. And this traffic is what is the lifeline of your entire online business. You can’t always go by the book, so here are some really great tips that would help you generate twice the traffic that earlier found its way to your website.

Advertise with great gusto: Advertising is a traditional mode of promoting your brand but here we aren’t talking about the physical form of advertisements, we are talking in terms of paid searches, digital media marketing, social media marketing, etc. If your business is online, all these are essential to help your business thrive online. Driving traffic to your site is not a child’s play and it would be in your favor not to treat it in that manner. Promote your brand with great vigor but again, do not go overboard.

Content is the King: The content you put up on your website is what brings people to your website. Your content should be eye-catching and pleasing to the senses. People don’t appreciate gibberish when they are ardently searching for something. So make sure the content on your website is relevant to your business, is interactive and can sustain the customer’s interest throughout the entire process. Also, plagiarism is a big ‘NO’. Nobody would trust your services if they witness a serious case of copy-pasting. So, be creative, make your own content and do not copy from other sources. That would question your credibility and just so you know, Google penalises websites which are involved in plagiarist activities.

The Key is Keywords: Your content on the website should have enough keywords that would help you draw the required traffic to your site. All you have to do is research keywords that are relevant to your business and also, while at it you have to look up the keywords that people often use in search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. Optimizing your content with keywords is a must-factor which would definitely enable you to drive more traffic to your website. But, here’s the catch, do not stuff your content with keywords. Use it only where it is necessary because if you keep clustering your content with keywords, there are chances that your readers would be less than interested to read it.

Long-tail Keywords are an add-on: Smaller keywords increase your traffic, whereas long-tail keywords increase your chances of conversions as well. If your intention is to bring in traffic and also get more conversions, make sure you include long-tail keywords into your content. These kind of keywords are more specific and more closer to a person’s buying intention. The person using the long-tail keyword knows exactly what he is looking for and if these keywords are included in your content, you would be that very person who would be selling his product to that customer.

Start Blogging: A blog is the perfect platform where you can interact with your customers/readers. All your interesting content needs to be seen and read by your customers and potential customers as well. You can write about your product, your offers, your way of working and be creative while you are at it. Before making a purchase, people tend to delve deep into your site and your blog would be the right door for them to enter your world.

Go Social: Almost every single person on the face of the earth is on one or the other social media platform. You can easily connect with a large and I mean really large audience on social media. It’s the most-accessible platform to generate traffic to your site. Facebook and Twitter being the major ones. If you do it in the right manner, your popularity can easily surpass what you had actually dreamt of. So plan your path accordingly and don’t be afraid to tread on new boundaries.

Say yes to Email Marketing: You need to go beyond your usual methods and connect to customers. It would be apt to say that you need to go to their doorstep and knock on their door and invite yourself in. That’s what happens in email marketing. You find your way into the customer’s mailbox and keep reminding them about yourself and what great products you have to offer them. Keep your customers in loop with all your latest renderings by sending them newsletters, offer emails, etc.

Add a bit of tradition to your concoction: While you are aggressively promoting your brand online, it wouldn’t hurt to add a bit of traditional marketing tools to your marketing toolkit. Pamphlets are still effective and joining a local business forums can help you network and bring more people onboard. Local networking is also conducive to bringing in more traffic to your website.

List yourself on Search Engines: Search Engines cannot look for your if you have just recently ventured into the online business world. For this, you have to list your business on these search engines, one at a time. So it would be easier for search engines to track you down and your customers would find it easier to look you up.

Analyse your traffic: You need to know how much you have progressed and how much traffic has been generated till now.
